Instructions
1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about five minutes.
2. Dry the Brussels sprouts very well. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness.
3. Season. In a large bowl, toss sprouts with avocado oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika until evenly coated.
4. Load the basket. Arrange sprouts cut side down in a single layer without crowding. Work in batches if needed.
5. Air fry for twelve to fifteen minutes, shaking the basket or flipping the sprouts around minute seven. Cook until the edges are deeply browned and crisp.
6. Finish. For a cheesy crust, sprinkle parmesan during the last two to three minutes. Off the heat, add lemon zest, red pepper flakes, and bacon crumbles if using.
7. Serve hot with lemon wedges. Taste and adjust salt to preference.
Tips
– Extra crispy method. After trimming, soak sprouts in cold salted water for ten minutes, then drain and dry thoroughly. This draws out some bitterness and promotes better browning.
– Use larger sprouts. Bigger halves char on the outside while staying tender inside.
– Do not overcrowd. Space between pieces allows hot air to circulate and crisp every edge.
– Add a tiny pinch of baking powder to the seasoning mix for turbo crisp skins. Keep it very light so flavor does not change.
– Flavor swaps. Try lemon pepper, everything bagel seasoning, or a teaspoon of grainy Dijon whisked into the oil for a tangy finish.
– Make ahead. Par cook for eight minutes, cool, then finish for four to five minutes just before serving.
– Reheat. Air fry leftovers at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for three to five minutes until hot and crisp again.
– Pairing ideas. Serve with roasted salmon, grilled steak, rotisserie chicken, or a keto friendly burger bowl.
