Instructions
1. **Empty and Inspect:** First, make sure your washing machine is completely empty. Take a good look inside the drum, around the detergent dispenser, and especially the rubber gasket (if you have a front-loader). This is where mold and mildew love to hide!
2. **The Vinegar Soak (for Front-Loaders):** For front-loading machines, pull back the rubber gasket and spray liberally with white vinegar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to loosen any gunk. For top-loaders, add 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the detergent dispenser or the drum.
3. **Baking Soda Power:** Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the washing machine drum. This acts as a natural abrasive and deodorizer.
4. **Hot Cycle Blast:** Set your washing machine to the hottest water setting and the largest load size. If your machine has a “self-clean” or “tub clean” cycle, use that! Otherwise, a regular hot wash will do. Start the cycle.
5. **Pause and Scrub (Front-Loaders):** If you have a front-loader, once the cycle has started and filled with water, pause the machine. Now, with your old toothbrush or scrub brush, get into that rubber gasket. Scrub away any visible grime, mold, or residue. It might be a little gross, but it’s satisfying! If you’re using an optional washing machine cleaner, add it now according to the product instructions.
6. **Complete the Cycle:** Let the washing machine complete its full hot water cycle. This will thoroughly rinse everything away.
7. **Wipe Down:** Once the cycle is done, use your microfiber cloth to wipe down the inside of the drum, the detergent dispenser, and especially the outside of the machine. Pay attention to any remaining residue. Leave the machine door or lid ajar to allow it to air dry completely.
Short Tips
* **Regular Maintenance is Key:** Aim to clean your washing machine every 1-3 months, depending on how often you do laundry and the hardness of your water.
* **Leave the Door Ajar:** After every wash, leave the washing machine door or lid open for a few hours (or overnight) to allow it to air dry. This prevents mildew growth.
* **Detergent Matters:** Use the recommended amount of high-efficiency (HE) detergent for your machine. Too much detergent can leave residue that contributes to odors.
* **Hot Water Boost:** Occasionally run a hot water cycle with just clothes you know can handle it (like towels or whites) to help flush out residue.
