  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Once melted, remove from heat and whisk in the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each. Stir in the vanilla.
  4. Gently fold in the flour until just combined—do not overmix! If using chocolate chips, fold them in now.
  5. Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes, until the center is set but still slightly gooey.
