Instructions
- Activate the yeast – In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar (or honey), and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Mix the dough – In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until the dough starts to form.
- Knead the dough – Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead for about 5 minutes on medium speed.
- First rise – Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Shape the loaf – Punch down the dough and shape it into a long loaf. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Second rise – Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Create the classic crust – Lightly score the top with a sharp knife. For a crispier crust, brush with water and place a small oven-safe dish of water in the oven.
- Bake – Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and crusty.
- Cool and serve – Let it cool before slicing. Enjoy fresh or store for later.
