How to Draw the Tree of Life – Let’s Get Started!

Step 1draw the tree of life step 1

To kick off this guide on how to draw the tree of life, we’ll start with the bark of the tree.

We’ll aim to make the tree quite curvy and pointy, so we’ll use lots of bent and twisted lines to create the trunk and branches.

The branches will come out of the tree top in just about any direction, and they’ll all be pretty wavy and curvy.

The central branch at the top will also have a curvy shape at the base. Once you’ve recreated all of these aspects as they appear in the reference image, you can move on to step 2!

2nd step – Then draw some details for the barkdraw the tree of life step 2

For this second part of your tree of life drawing, we’ll add lots of bark and branch detail to give the tree a bit more of an older, weathered look.

To do this, we’ll draw many curved lines on the tree, some of which will curl inward to form curvy shapes.

You can also extend more rows from the ends of the branches to add more twigs and small branches sticking out.

Once you’re happy with how these details look, we can move on to the next part where we’ll work on the roots.

Step 3 – Draw roots for the treedraw the tree of life step 3

This step of our guide on how to draw the tree of life can be a bit complex, because we will be drawing a lot of roots under the tree.

This is a step that may seem harder than it actually will be, as we will take it nice and slow!

Each root will arise individually from the base of the tree, and they will each have a thicker beginning before branching out into many smaller root branches.

For this design, we will be aiming to create 5 or 6 of these roots, each branching off into several smaller roots.

If you take it slow and follow the reference image, you can easily recreate this look!

Step 4 – Then add some more to the branches and rootsdraw the tree of life step 4

For your tree of life drawing, we will strive to make it as complete as possible. For this reason we will draw even more details on the branches and roots.

For the branches, add a few more curved and wavy lines on each tip coming out of the branches.

We’ll do a similar idea for the roots, where we’ll draw straighter lines coming out of the existing roots.

Once you’ve done that, we can start adding the final details and touches to your image, so let’s move on to step 5!

Step 5 – Finish the leaves of your tree of life drawingdraw the tree of life step 5

Without a healthy head of leaves, this tree would look pretty dead, and that would kind of defeat the purpose of a tree of life.

This is why we will approach this aspect with some final touches in this fifth stage of our guide on how to draw the tree of life.

To do this, we’ll draw an outline around all the branches of the tree to create this leafy canopy.

The line of this outline will be quite twisted and wavy, as this will help give it a more dynamic look.

Once you’ve drawn the leaf canopy, you’re ready to move on to the final step! Before doing so, you can also add your own details.

These can be as small as leaves or fruit falling from the tree or as big as the sun in the background. It’s up to you, so have fun with it and express your creativity!

Step 6 – Finish your tree of life drawing with some colordraw the tree of life step 6

This image will often be spherical in shape, so we’ll color it for that last part of your tree of life drawing.

You can use a drawing compass with your pens or colored pencils to create a perfect circle enveloping the tree as it appears in our reference image.

Then we used browns and greens for the bark and leaves and pretty blues for the background.

This is what we chose, but you should feel free to use other colors, art media and tools you like for this image.

Colors can do a lot to give a photo a mood, so let your creativity guide you as you finish it!
